Professor Beverley Jane Hunt OBE, FRCP, FRCPath, MD

Professor Beverley J Hunt is Professor of Thrombosis & Haemostasis at King’s College London & Consultant in Thrombosis & Haemostasis in the Thrombosis & Haemophilia Centre at Guy’s & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust. She is also co-founder and now Co-chair of Trustees of Thrombosis UK, the UK go to charity for improving awareness, care and research in venous thromboembolism, and is now a medium sized charity.

Beverley Hunt graduated from Liverpool Medical School where she received the Chester chalice for the medical student who contributed most to the good name of the medical school. We are sure that her time as a singer in a local punk band did not contribute to this.

She spent her junior doctor years as an internal medicine trainee in Liverpool and then London & Kent, when she decided to specialise in Haematology and trained on the Royal Postgraduate Medical School rotation, and in spare time worked as a science presenter for BBC TV. She then spent 3 years at the UK’s largest Heart and Lung Transplant Centre, exploring haematological aspects of human and xenograft rejection. She spent hours in the operating theatre, fascinated by the need to improve perioperative bleeding.

In 1991 she moved to a newly created post- Consultant in Thrombosis & Haemostasis to the Haemophilia Centre at St Thomas’s Hospital in 1991 and has been there ever since. She was charged with setting up a Thrombosis Centre: it now has the largest number of patients with antiphospholipid centre in the world, many patients with high risk thrombophilias and set up the PERT team.

Her research has been prolific with over 530 published papers and an h index of 113. She is a holder of multiple grants covering clinical trials to laboratory studies, has supervised many PhDs and MDs and lectures all over the world.

She has held numerous leadership roles including chair of World Thrombosis Day 2018-2020 co -chair of the World Health Organisation living Covid -19 guideline development group since 2022. She is also a member of the WHO guideline development group for filoviruses (which cause viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola and Lassa fever). In 2022 she was chair of the ISTH congress committee, which was held in London. Twenty years ago she cofounded the British Society for Haematology Obstetric Haematology Group which has led to Obstetric Haematology becoming a major Haematology subspeciality in the UK.

In 2019 she was awarded the title of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s birthday honours list for services to medicine. In 2020 she was awarded the British Society for Haematology medal for service to haematology. In 2021 she received an International Society of Thrombosis & Haemostasis Esteemed Career award. In 2023 with other members of the UK Expert Haematology panel for vaccine- induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) she was awarded a Royal College of Pathology Achievement award. In April 2026 she was awarded the British Society for Haematology Lifetime Achievement Award

In the last year she has co-chaired Element 1 of the Maternal Care Bundle published 6th January 2026 by NHS England, aiming to reduce death due to VTE in pregnancy, and the team produced a VTE self assessment tool for early pregnancy, aiming to reduce early mortality.

She is also passionate about setting up an international group with Unitaid to ensure that everyone with bleeding due to trauma, post partum haemorrhage or surgical bleeding, has ready access to tranexamic acid, for tranexamic acid is not available in many African countries.
