LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, the participants will be able to:

Discuss the epidemiology and pathophysiology of PE, including how to assess the risk of patients presenting with symptoms consistent with PE.

Identify features that define low, intermediate and high‐risk PE.

Appreciate the impact of healthcare disparities on the diagnosis, management and outcome socially disadvantaged groups with VTE.

Determine the role and clinical evidence for the various treatment options for intermediate‐ and high‐risk PE patients including: anticoagulation, fibrinolysis (intravenous and catheter‐directed), thrombectomy (suction and surgical), and IVC filter placement.

Recognize the potential complications of acute PE and how to prevent and treat including support of the high risk PE patient and those requiring mechanical circulatory support.

Describe an algorithm to follow, evaluate and manage patients with post-PE syndrome.

Discuss CTEPH and the combination of pharmacologic, mechanical and surgical treatment options available for these patients.

Describe special populations with PE and their specific treatment challenges, including patients with active malignancy, coagulopathies, pregnancy, and those from socially disadvantaged groups.

Discuss the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to PE management, and how to implement a PE Response Team (PERT) in their hospital.

Identify what constitutes high quality care for PE and how to establish a Center of Excellence in PE management.

Describe the benefits of a multidisciplinary coordinated response to the care of PE patients including acute management, inter-hospital transfer of patients, and long term follow up.
